카우벨이란?
원래는 인도나 알프스지방에서 방목하는 소의 목에 단 종 모양의 방울을 가리키는 말이지만, 그와 비슷한 모양을 한 금속제 체명악기를 이렇게 부른다. 소나 양의 목에 다는 방울에는 추가 있으나 악기로서의 카우벨에는 추가 없고 채로 쳐서 소리를 낸다. 드럼세트와 함께 편성되어 사용되는 경우가 많다. 독일의 작곡가 R.슈트라우스의 《알프스교향곡》(1916년 초연)에는 목양의음(牧羊擬音)으로 사용되었다.
